FEATURES & FUNCTIONALITY
Woodward is an industry leader in design and development of angle gearing and gearboxes for aerospace and defense motion-control applications.
Basic Architecture
Woodward’s angle gearheads are offered in an array of sizes in inch-series diameter codes from Size 8 to Size 80 (.8” to 8”), commensurate with Woodward’s standard servo motors, conventional gearheads, and components. Woodward can furnish these units as complete vehicle-level, line-replaceable units (LRUs) where the maintenance philosophy of the program dictates.
Angle gearing, specifically right-angle gearing, is an effective way to optimize the installation of an actuator in an area of confined space; the use of angle gearing allows the motor to lay along the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, where more length is generally available. Angles other than 90° are also available, such as those required for in-wing routing of rigid torque-tube-driven actuation systems.
Technology
Woodward employs a variety of gearing technology in the angle passes, including bevel (straight or spiral teeth) and face gearing. Woodward’s face gearing is known for its high-torque efficiency and ratio per unit volume. In many cases, Woodward embeds our in-house spur and planetary passes (with their popular, optionally available features) along with the angle gearing, in order to provide a very high-performance integrated package in minimal volume.
