By collecting all production data in real time, MES (Manufacturing Execution System) software makes it possible to control and track production more effectively. It provides all the necessary information and instructions to managers and operators so that they can ensure the smooth running of production, right from the release of a manufacturing order through to the finished product. The software tracks all the information needed to meet quality requirements and identify sources of production optimization. As a result, it plays a major role in the continuous improvement of production. Work by ISA-95 further led to a more detailed analysis of the services that an MES solution must deliver and to underline the systems perspective. While the different MES functions can be implemented incrementally, they are not independent of each other and must share a large amount of information.
