The Polycon wireless system has been developed in collaboration with UK RAF, Bristow and CHC Norway. The system provides rotary and fixed-wing operators with reliable communications and increased operational awareness by providing highly robust wireless communication between internal and external crew. Because of a very ruggedized design it is capable of doing this reliably in extremely harsh operating environments. The Polycon system eliminates communication restrictions with outside crew. It provides seamless hands-free, continuous communications by extending the ICS to outside crew. Communication is continuous two way communication, supported by None Interrupted VOX and effective noise cancelling. Range is sufficient to allow the aircraft to move away, burn off fuel, or act as a relay station to avoid terrain if the outside crew needs to communicate back to base. The outside crew will stay on the ICS at all times, and is able to both continuously listen in to the communication between the rest of the crew, and to address them as within the aircraft. Down the wire he will also act as a second set of eyes for the crew inside. He is able to warn of terrain, power lines, or other obstacles that may be out of sight or difficult to designate for the pilot or the hoist operator. Increased safety is achieved by drastically improving situational awareness, and by reliability of communications. Also the operational window of the aircraft may in many cases be safely extended allowing better use of a valuable resource.
