Titanium in aerospace
Titanium is widely used in this industry, particularly for its excellent mechanical properties and low density (specific mass).
Aerospace is by far the first titanium user and its use in this field is in constant growth from one generation of plane to the next. The latest civil planes, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A380, use much more titanium than the former models. Boeing has indeed increased the use of titanium from 8% in its 777 to 20-22% in the 787, while Airbus has raised its use from 5% in their former models to 9% in the A380.
The most commonly used grade is the Ti 6Al 4V Grade 5 alloy, according to AMS 4928 – bars – and AMS 4911 – sheets and plates.
Other alloys with different mechanical properties are also being used for special uses.
